Bradford #1 Democratic Challenger in Pennsylvania

3. Republican Jay Moyer vs. Democrat Matt Bradford in the 70th Legislative District
The race between the freshman Moyer and the charismatic Bradford is ground zero for shifting party control in Montgomery County. The GOP's once iron-tight grip on the county has given way to a rising tide of Democratic candidates, but both parties see reason for hope in this race.
In 2006, Moyer, of Lower Salford Township, beat Democrat Netta Young Hughes by only 103 votes. At first, it seemed like he got a break this year when his opponent on the ballot, Dwayne Royster, stepped aside for personal reasons. But Democrats replaced him with Bradford, a former municipal official with strong fiscal credentials and a reputation for being a fervent campaigner. Bradford has had to run an abbreviated campaign, but party officials consider him a stronger candidate than Hughes.
"Matt's always been high on our list with this particular seat," county Democratic Party chairman Marcel Groen said. "He's young, he's energetic, he's hardworking. We hope and expect that he'll win."
